Ruth Roman was born in Lynn, Massachusetts, the third youngest daughter of Lithuanian-Jewish parents Mary Pauline (Gold) and Abraham Roman. Her father was a carnival barker, died at the age of a tiny little girl. This forced her mother to provide for the family by being an attendant and a cleaner. Ruth went to school and grew up in poverty within Boston Massachusetts' tenement districts. She left school after two short years to pursue acting. The path was difficult to take. Although she got an interview at a theatre in New York posing as a still for a mystery magazine however, there were no theatre opportunities that was offered. Following a short stint as a club hat girl, she decided to return home and quit the job she was working in. In Boston, when she worked at evening as an actor for the New England Repertory Company and during the day she was an usherette. The study of drama helped her to earn her degree at Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
